Collecting game engine suggestions

For the next award we can already collect suggestions for open-source game engines that allow running commercial games on different platforms:

Off my head:

OpenMW
Ryzom
OpenXcom
SCUMMVM
gemrb
ArxLibertatis
VCMI

other suggestions?

Another one: OpenRA

Cool trailer: http://youtu.be/ueosN-JFqG0

Isn't OpenRA a complete game? You can play it without downloading the original data

Julius's picture

Ahh, it seems like it auto downloads from the EA freeware releases. Wasn't aware at all that these are free as in beer now.

another one to consider: http://sourceforge.net/projects/fheroes2/
but as VCMI (HoMM 3) seems the cooler one, this isn't really that necessary.

This one is cool too: http://dengine.net/

Cheeseness (Josh)'s picture

From the award description it seems that generic engines not tied to non-free assets are welcome too

  • Godot (recently released udner the MIT licence, still in beta)
  • Ren'Py (possibly the most prolific F/OSS engine?)
  • GameKit
  • Irrlicht
  • Cube 2 (the Cube 2 engine is ZLIB licenced for use, the content of Cube 2: Sauerbraten is not)

And some frameworks (I'm not sure where the line between "engine" and "framework" is being drawn here, or whether frameworks are welcome)

so we have:

two have to go! so please take your pick.

I didn't include the engines from Chesseness post, because we have a nice selection of games with proprietary assets (not necessary payware) who can be associated with a distinctive theme. (Engines can be part of a later award)

p.s. i would not nominate enemy territory and doomsday engine.

holarse's picture

why is Irrlicht not accepted? Isn't ScummVM more like an emulator like DOSBox is? Are there any new games made with ScummVM?

* JMonkeyEngine (http://jmonkeyengine.org/)
* And especially MonoGame (http://www.monogame.net/), which runs most of the current commercial linux steam ports.
* OGRE (http://www.ogre3d.org/) used in Torchlight, Ankh, Jack Keane
* Stratagus (http://stratagus.com/) formerly used for an old open source Warcraft2-Clone

i didnt wanted to nominate projects that would have been to diverse and thus incomparable. so i suggested to stick with projects that are designed to work with a small amount of commercial game data.
nothing is ruled out unless its not open source. the main reason was to keep the designated game engines for a later award.

holarse's picture

Could you post the final nominee list? and how would we vote?

ps: sorry for being a noob on this!

pheonton's picture

we decide together who is going to be nominated, every one can have a say in this... (well not for long ^^, the online vote will start tomorrow). So if you do have a list of 10 favorites, pls share them with us. As a matter-of-fact i think

can be added to the list.

  • OpenMW[Morrowind (own original game)]
  • Ryzom[Ryzom (free to play)]
  • OpenXcom[X-COM (own original game)]
  • gemrb [Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, Planescape: Torment games (own original game)]
  • ArxLibertatis[Arx Fatalis (own original game)]
  • VCMI[Heroes of Might and Magic III: In the Wake of Gods (own original game)]
  • OpenRA[C&C (Tiberian Dawn), C&C: Red Alert, and Dune 2000 (original data is freeware)]
  • ioDOOM3[Doom3 (own original game)]
  • OpenSpades[Ace of Spades (everything GPL)]
  • doomsday engine[Doom, Heretic, Hexen... (original data is freeware)]
  • stratagus[Warcraft I+II, Starcraft I (own original game)]
  • CaesarIA[Caesar III (own original game)]

i added CaesarIA.

The projects that dont fit the most are probably Ryzom and OpenSpades. What do you think?

Julius's picture

Is CaesarIA somewhat playable? Ok that criteria would rule out OpenMW as well.

I was under the impression OpenSpades would need the art assets from Ace of Spades?
