Next theme?

I kind of like the idea of themes so what should we do next?

Generic game engines was suggested (stuff like OGRE3D), but IMHO that strays too far from the game and most people will not be able to judge an engine properly.

How about game tools? Stuff like generic server browsers, convenient game installers, mumble and the like?

Or we could ask for votes on emulators.

Other ideas?

I think fully open source games would be a good one to do, not featuring ones we have voted on before.

i agree with liam. And as far as i know the games i posted above all fall into that category.

Just put your game suggestion out so we have a list to choose from.

Best clones would be a nice topic as well. I think of FreeCiv, FreeCol, OpenTTD, CorsixTH and so on.

cool some suggestions ;) , but as for the theme I feel like a restriction at this point would not leave us with many recent projects (freecol). And a couple of games that where already nominated fall into that category too, e.g. openttd, unkownhorizons, hedgewars, minetest, openclonk, ... (and as far is i'm informed corsixTH needs the original files https://github.com/CorsixTH/CorsixTH)

But from your list freeciv http://freeciv.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page could be added. And while i was thinking about your theme suggestion i was reminded of widelands https://wl.widelands.org/, witch could also make the list.

EDIT: oops, i already mentioned freeciv above...

How about we call it just "strategy games"? Seems like we can fit in quite a few of the ones mentioned above in that category.

pheonton's picture

well if you want to put a name on it, i don't mind ;) but we still need to find games that justify a nomination.

crossfire had a recent release

Looks like we have many different theme suggestions now:

tools, strategy games or clones of commercial games.

and so fare we don't have a definite direction, it seams as if everyone has is own thoughts on it (not bad at all) but we need to get a list of 10 projects.

For the sake of simplicity and as a compromise we could pick the best projects (tools and games) and not care about a theme, just because we already have enough suggestions for that. That doesn't mean I'm fine to support what every theme you like (but as i said, i don't see distinct opinion yet.)

Here are some that could be considered.

FreeDroidRPG http://www.freedroid.org/
Widelands https://wl.widelands.org/
OpenTTD https://www.openttd.org/en/
Pingus http://pingus.seul.org/
Flightgear http://www.flightgear.org/
StepMania http://www.stepmania.com/
Ur-Quan Masters http://sc2.sourceforge.net/

Just to move the discussion along, i will create a list, of what i think could be nominated.

Widelands https://wl.widelands.org/ (real-time strategy)
Flightgear http://www.flightgear.org/ (aviation simulation)
StepMania http://www.stepmania.com/ (dance and rhythm)
FreeDroidRPG http://www.freedroid.org/ (futuristic role-playing)
Crossfire http://crossfire.real-time.com/index.html (multiplayer adventure)
Keeper RL http://keeperrl.com/ (ASCII graphics are open source...) (fantasy dungeon simulator)
Unvanquished http://unvanquished.net/ (futuristic first person shooter)
Hyperrouge http://www.roguetemple.com/z/hyper.php (non-euclidean rouge-like)
PokerTH http://www.pokerth.net/ (texas holdem poker)

Mumble http://mumble.sourceforge.net/ (voice chat)

i only considered recent developments and tried to balance the game categories. You are most welcome to suggest a themed list though.

i feel like i was a little fast to include tools and games on one list. so here is an updated one:

Widelands https://wl.widelands.org/ (real-time strategy)
Flightgear http://www.flightgear.org/ (aviation simulation)
StepMania http://www.stepmania.com/ (dance and rhythm)
FreeDroidRPG http://www.freedroid.org/ (futuristic role-playing)
Crossfire http://crossfire.real-time.com/index.html (multiplayer adventure)
Keeper RL http://keeperrl.com/ (ASCII graphics are open source...) (fantasy dungeon simulator)
Unvanquished http://unvanquished.net/ (futuristic first person shooter)
Hyperrouge http://www.roguetemple.com/z/hyper.php (non-euclidean rouge-like)
PokerTH http://www.pokerth.net/ (texas holdem poker)
Freeciv http://freeciv.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page (multiplayer strategy)

replaced Mumble with Freeciv.

Seems like a solid list, however it is really mixed randomly which I personally think we should avoid. Let's try to stick to broad categories at least, to give each award a theme of some sorts.

pheonton's picture

well, if someone has a list with 10 games and a theme, i'm more than happy to change the list.

i was looking for something to swap freedroidrpg for, because although the game is under active development, it hasn't seen a release in the last 2 years.

maybe glportal? http://glportal.de/

Ok I also put up an announcement on the FreeGamer blog. I also took the liberty and asked for suggestions on how to improve the awards... lets see if anyone comes up with a good idea ;)
